- Scientific Name
- Fusarium virguliforme
- Background
- Soybeans in Edgecombe county, variety Dg 58xt30, were scouted and it was observed that 2% of the field was affected by dieback, browning, yellowing between the veins, scorch/burn, and wilting in patches through the field which was located in a high area.
- Conclusion
- The causal agent of Soybean Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) is the soil borne fungus Fusarium sp. The fungus begins attacking plants roots about 2-3 weeks after germination, but plant symptoms are not observed until later in the growing season. Rotation with wheat or oats reduce SDS damage the greatest of rotations assessed.
