Soybean cyst nematodes

scouted Oct. 31, 2023

Scientific Name
Heterodera glycines
Background
Soybeans in Pamlico County were scouted, and 10% were observed to be affected by stunting in patches. The site is a high area that is dry and receives sun.
Conclusion
This issue was identified as soybean cyst nematode, caused by Heterodera glycines. The nematode damages the soybean roots by penetrating, feeding and reproducing on the root tissue. Nematicide fumigant, in-furrow, seed treatments products are available, though effectiveness is variable, especially under elevated SCN pressure. These chemical controls for SCN and other nematodes are often expensive and may not always results in a yield response.
