- Scientific Name
- Spissistilus festinus
- Background
- Soybeans in Vance County were scouted, and it was observed that 5% of the field was affected by damping-off, defoliation, and stunting. The impacted soybeans were located within a 25-acre section that had been sprayed by a chemical company. The soybeans in the sprayed area exhibited stunted growth.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as the three-cornered alfalfa hopper. Both adults and nymphs feed on the soybean plant by piercing the main stem, branches, and leaf petioles. Weakening and breaking of soybean stems as well as lodging are symptoms associated with damage from three-cornered alfalfa hoppers. Recommended treatment to control this pest can include using a pyrethroid insecticide, along with continued scouting.
