- Scientific Name
- Cercospora sojina
- Background
- Soybeans in Yadkin County, variety AG54XFO were scouted, and approximately 30% of the field was affected by bleaching, browning, and yellowing between and along the leaf veins, as well as leaf spot symptoms. The submitted samples represent untreated strips from a foliar fungicide trial. Treated strips received Miravis Top at the R3 growth stage. In addition, the entire field was treated with herbicide applications of RoundUp and Flexstar.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as Frogeye leaf spot which is a common foliar disease in North Carolina. The causal agent is Cercospora sojina. Early symptoms are small, dark, water-soaked circular to angular lesions, which expand as the disease progresses and become brown to grayish with a brown-reddish border. Lesions can also occur on the stems and the pods. Management practices include crop rotation with non-host crops like corn or wheat, host resistance, and fungicide use may be beneficial when susceptible hosts are planted and there’s disease pressure
