Soybean frogeye leaf spot

scouted Sept. 12, 2023

Scientific Name
Cercospora sojina
Background
Soybeans in Yadkin County, variety AG54XFO were scouted, and approximately 30% of the field was affected by bleaching, browning, and yellowing between and along the leaf veins, as well as leaf spot symptoms. The submitted samples represent untreated strips from a foliar fungicide trial. Treated strips received Miravis Top at the R3 growth stage. In addition, the entire field was treated with herbicide applications of RoundUp and Flexstar.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Frogeye leaf spot which is a common foliar disease in North Carolina. The causal agent is Cercospora sojina. Early symptoms are small, dark, water-soaked circular to angular lesions, which expand as the disease progresses and become brown to grayish with a brown-reddish border. Lesions can also occur on the stems and the pods. Management practices include crop rotation with non-host crops like corn or wheat, host resistance, and fungicide use may be beneficial when susceptible hosts are planted and there’s disease pressure
