- Scientific Name
- Cercospora sojina
- Background
- Soybeans in Stokes county, variety MS4850XF, were scouted and observed 90% blackening, greasy-water soaked, widespread, low area, kudzu bugs and stink bugs present (two to five bugs per plant). Frogeye leaf spot is obvious in most of the field. This variety does not have high resistance to frogeye. Petiole nodes are water soaked on some plants. No signs of boring or burrowing in the stem.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as Frogeye leaf spot which is a common foliar disease in North Carolina. The causal agent is Cercospora sojina. Early symptoms are small, dark, water-soaked circular to angular lesions, which expand as the disease progresses and become brown to grayish with a brown-reddish border. Lesions can also occur on the stems and the pods. Management practices include crop rotation with non-host crops like corn or wheat, host resistance, and fungicide use may be beneficial when susceptible hosts are planted and there’s disease pressure
