Green Stem Syndrome

scouted Nov. 8, 2024

Scientific Name
Green stem syndrome
Background
Soybeans in Johnston County, variety AG69XFO, were being scouted, and it was observed that 100% of the field was affected by green stem syndrome. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
Conclusion
In this case, no foliar pathogens were found, and the stem tissue looked healthy with no vascular discoloration. The GSS in this case is likely caused by environmental stresses like nutrient imbalances or genetic traits of the varieties planted. Green stem is a term for a soybean plant with non-normal senescence resulting in the stem remaining green (and sometimes retaining leaves) when generally other parts of the plant have senesced (most leaves have dropped, pods and seed are mature).
