Spider mites Tetranychidae

scouted Nov. 12, 2024

Scientific Name
Tetranychus sp.
Background
Soybeans in Pitt County were being scouted and observed 85% of the field was affected by browning and yellowing in the crown and pods. The discoloration was localized. The site is in a high area. The plants exhibited signs of insect chewing and chlorosis.
Conclusion
The leaves from this field were diagnosed with damage from spider mites. These arachnids kill individual cells by piercing them. The damage is often seen as specks of white, yellow, or brown stipples on the leaves. The population increases in hot and dry conditions. Some insecticides cause spider mites to have more offspring due to the fact they are not insects.
