- Scientific Name
- Thysanoptera
- Background
- A corn field at V6 growing stage was being scouted and it was observed that 20% of the field was affected by delayed and poor emergence. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as thrips damage. During the corn growing season, Thrips damage is of more concern at two stages: the first being young seedling plants and the second during ear formation. When plants are young, they look stunted, and if infestation is high, distorted leaves turn brown around the edges and cup upward. During ear formation, thrips damage provides an opportunity for pathogens that cause ear rot diseases. Treating for thrips isn't necessary when seedlings are young, as they're most likely to outgrow the damage, and treating for thrips at ear formation isn't likely to prevent the spread of ear rot diseases.
