- Scientific Name
- Fusarium sp.
- Background
- Soybeans in Granville county were scouted and observed 10% of the field was affected, by dieback, marginal browning and yellowing, and leaf spot in patches. High amount of kudzu bugs in the field. Damage seen heavily in corner of field, then is found in spots throughout the field, though only leaf dieback and browning rather than whole plant and growing point damage.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as Fusarium root rot and Fusarium crown rot. Fusarium root rot is caused by Fusarium sp. Fusarium root rot can result in both pre- and post-emergence damping-off, leading to delayed emergence and stunting of infected seedlings. Fusarium crown rot can cause soybean seedling diseases, especially with wet conditions shortly after planting. These are more prevalent in poorly drained or compacted soils. Improving soil drainage may reduce stress and risk of infection.
