- Scientific Name
- Pentatomidae
- Background
- Soybeans in Alamance county, variety 59E01(Don Mario), were scouted and observed 95% of the field was affected by widespread leaf spots, brown/tan/black/purple leaves and stems. First notices some leaf curl after roundup application and has gotten worse as the season continued. The soil is red clay and has received little rainfall. Enlist and Roundup are the only chemicals used.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as Stink bugs, family Pentatomidae. The are three species that typically affect soybeans, the green stink bug, southern green stink bug, and the brown stink bug. They affect fruiting soybeans, reaching peak populations late August to early October. Damage from Pentatomidae is due to digestive enzymes found in the bug's saliva. Green stink bug species can be treated with acephate and pyrethroid insecticides. Brown stink bugs can be treated with a high concentration of acephate or bifenthrin. In North Carolina, the brown stink bug is the primary pest. They can cause three kinds of damage, in early vegetative stages plant can be stunted, or plants can be killed, in the pre-tasselling stage ears can be crooked and have missing kernels and in the reproductive stages kernels size and weight can be reduced and secondary pathogens can be introduced leading to aflatoxin or fumonisin contamination.
