Bean leaf beetles

scouted June 26, 2024

Scientific Name
Cerotoma trifurcata
Background
Soybeans in Carteret County were scouted and it was observed that 30% of the field looks excellent for minimum rainfall. Certain spots in field are dead in patches.
Conclusion
This issue was casued by Cerotoma trifurcata. Its feed patterns appear as round holes eaten through the leaves. Larvae is can also feed on developing root nodules. Treatment is warrented if defoliation is greater than 30%. Two treatments might be needed. Younger vegetative seedlings are more suceptible to adult feed and more tolerant as they grow. Bean leaf beetle is a common insect of soybean seedlings in the Tidewater region, it seldom requires treatment at this locale or anywhere in North Carolina.
