Rhizoctonia root rot

Background
Soybeans in Sampson county were scouted and observed 35% of the field was affected by defoliation, browning, yellowing between the veins and marginal, in spots in the field, widespread, dry site. Random areas in the field are experiencing yellowing of lower leaves along with die back and leaf roll. Affected plants appear stunted compared to healthier plants. Less nodulation was observed on affected plants as compared to healthier plants as well. This are has sandy soil. The conditions are dry and hot, but moisture can be found approximately 2" below soil surface.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Rhizoctonia root rot. This disease is caused by Rhizoctonia sp. Rhizoctonia root rot can result in both pre- and post-emergence damping-off, leading to delayed emergence and stunting of infected seedlings. Prevalence tends to increase in warm and moist, but not saturated soils.
