Threecornered alfalfa hopper

scouted Aug. 31, 2023

Scientific Name
Spissistilus festinus
Background
Soybeans in Johnston county were scouted, and soybean stems were observed to have snapped off.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as the three-cornered alfalfa hopper. Both adults and nymphs feed on the soybean plant by piercing the main stem, branches, and leaf petioles. Weakening and breaking of soybean stems as well as lodging are symptoms associated with damage from three-cornered alfalfa hoppers. Recommended treatment to control this pest can include using a pyrethroid insecticide, along with continued scouting.
