Soybeans in Johnston country were scouted and it was observed that 20% of the field was affected by yellowing between the veins, root rot, and stem rot in patches. The site is high and sunny. The soybeans have died in patches in the field. General yellowing and leaves showed dramatic interveinal chlorosis. Split stems show a brown pith.
Conclusion
The causal agent of Soybean Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) is the soil borne fungus Fusarium sp. The fungus begins attacking plants roots about 2-3 weeks after germination, but plant symptoms are not observed until later in the growing season. Rotation with wheat or oats reduce SDS damage the greatest of rotations assessed.
