Root knot nematode

scouted Oct. 25, 2024

Scientific Name
Meloidogyne sp.
Background
Soybeans in Johnston County were being scouted, and it was observed that 85% of the field was affected by widespread dieback. Nematode galls were present on roots; stress may have contributed to plants with green stems and pods.
Conclusion
Root knot nematodes were identified as part of the issue. High population levels of root knot nematodes present symptoms of non-uniform stunting, wilting, and chlorotic patches, as well as an increased likelihood of disease complex with other soilborne pathogens, and a hindrance to water and nutrient uptake. Selecting a root knot nematode-resistant variety is the most cost-effective tool for soybean nematode management, but there are other options like rotating with poor host crops to help decrease populations or utilizing chemical control.
