- Background
- A soybean field, variety NK 39M8XF, in Rockingham County was being scouted, and it was observed that 80% of the field was affected by dieback, browning, and leaf spot. Found widespread. The field is a dry site. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- Soybean vein necrosis virus (SVNV) was also present in the field. SVNV is a Tospovirus occasionally present in North Carolina soybeans that while not economically important in the region has the potential to cause severe damage in individual soybean fields. This virus infects the whole plant and leads to necrotic tissue. It's a vector-mediated pathogen spread by immature thrips and currently there is no economical management tool for SVNV.
