- Background
- A corn field at V6 growing stage was being scouted, and it was observed that 20% of the field was affected by delayed and poor emergence. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as low pH damage. Low pH levels can damage corn by decreasing nutrient availability and increasing the solubility of toxic metals like aluminum. Soil pH below 5.5 can cause deficiencies in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, magnesium, and calcium. Applying lime to increase soil pH is recommended when average levels are below 5.5.
