Soybeans in Johnston county, variety Group 65?, were scouted and observed with 30% of the field affected by dieback and wilting in patches in the field. The field was sprayed with fierce preemergence followed by xtend 2 weeks after.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Pythium root rot and/or Pythium crown rot. This disease is caused by Pythium sp. Pythium root rot and crown rot can result in both pre- and post-emergence damping-off, leading to delayed emergence and stunting of infected seedlings. Prevalence tends to increase in warm and moist, but not saturated soils. This pathogen is an oomycete.
