- Background
- A corn field, variety Illusion and Silver King, was being scouted, and it was observed that 45% of the field was affected by leaves turning purple/red in patches. The field has both high and low spots, poorly drained spots, and sandhills, and both are affected. It has been abnormally dry and cold, but the grower irrigates with a reel. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as phosphorus deficiency. Corn plants affected by phosphorus deficiency usually appear stunted, grow slowly, and the stem and lower leaves have a purplish hue at the tips and margins. In severe cases, the entire leaf can become purple. Any soil condition that limits root growth, such as cool temperatures, wet or very dry conditions, or soil compaction, can induce deficiency symptoms.
