Heat stress

scouted June 15, 2026

Scientific Name
Heat stress
Background
A soybean field, variety AG54XFO was being scouted in Halifax County and it was observed that 75% of the field was affected by defoliation, dieback, and yellowing. The issue is widespread across 400 acres. Dry site with very dry conditions in the county. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as heat stress. When temperatures exceed 85°F for several days, heat stress can occur. Soybeans get stressed when excessive heat and drought conditions happen at the same time, leading to reduced moisture and nutrient uptake. Heat also accelerates soybean maturity.
