- A corn field, variety DKC 68-35, was being scouted, and it was observed that 2% of the field was affected by dieback and stem rot in random parts of the field. Wet site due to irrigation. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as low pH damage. Low pH levels can damage corn by decreasing nutrient availability and increasing solubility of toxic metals like aluminum. Soil pH below 5.5 can cause deficiencies in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, magnesium, and calcium. Applying lime to increase soil pH is recommended when average levels are below 5.5.
