Bacterial soft rot

Background
A corn field, variety DKC 68-35, was being scouted, and it was observed that 2% of the field was affected by dieback and stem rot in random parts of the field. Wet site due to irrigation. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
Conclusion
This issue was identified as Bacterial soft rot, also known as bacterial stalk rot of corn, caused by Erwinia sp.. Bacterial soft rot on corn is characterized by rapid desiccation of the youngest leaves and a soft, watery rot of leaf tissue. This disease typically happens in sprinkler-irrigated fields or unusual rain.
