Phytophthora root rot

scouted July 13, 2021

Scientific Name
Phytophthora sp.
Background
Soybeans in Pasquotank county, variety Southern Harvest 5321 ES, were scouted and observed 5% of the field was affected by widespread dieback, yellowing, and root and stem rot. Rain has been normal with temperatures above average. Plants have been dying for 6 weeks randomly.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Phytophthora root rot. Phytophthora root and stem rot of soybean is caused by Phytophthora sp. These species of Phytophthora is not a true fungi, but belong to a group of fungal like organisms called oomycetes (water molds). Cultural practices that improve soil drainage is important to limit the spread of P. sojae. Because infections often take place early in the growing season, use of a seed treatment or soil-applied fungicide may be beneficial to reducing infections. Chemistries containing mefenoxam or metalaxyl are both effective to reducing disease.
