- Scientific Name
- Spissistilus festinus
- Background
- Soybeans in Iredell County were being scouted, and it was observed that 65% of the field was affected by dieback, and healthy plants were short between 12 and 16 inches tall. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis. The fields were planted in early July, and the previous crop was wheat.
- Conclusion
- Three-cornered alfalfa hopper nymphs were recovered from the stems of the sample sent to the PDIC. Both adults and nymphs feed on the soybean plant by piercing the main stem, branches, and leaf petioles. Weakening and breaking of soybean stems, as well as lodging, are symptoms associated with damage from three-cornered alfalfa hoppers. Recommended treatment to control this pest can include using a pyrethroid insecticide, along with continued scouting.
