Background
Soybeans in Johnston county, variety dyna grow S72XT80, were scouted and observed 20% of the field was affected by dieback, stem rot and wilting, in localized areas. Four different fields with the same variety of soybeans. The corners had fanned out like a baseball diamond of dying soybeans.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as charcoal rot of soybean, caused by Macrophomina phaseolina. It starts out with patches of stunted or wilted plants, while the infection can happen very early in the season, the symptoms usually appear after flowering.
