- Scientific Name
- Pythium sp.
- Background
- Soybeans in Tyrrell county, variety Southern Harvest 4820E3, were scouted and observed 40% of the field was affected by damping off, dieback, blackening, yellowing, and stunting, in patches in the field, high area and sunny site. Soybeans were growing great then got up to 4 inches tall and started dying off.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as Pythium root rot and/or Pythium crown rot. This disease is caused by Pythium sp. Pythium root rot and crown rot can result in both pre- and post-emergence damping-off, leading to delayed emergence and stunting of infected seedlings. Prevalence tends to increase in warm and moist, but not saturated soils. This pathogen is an oomycete.
