- Scientific Name
- Pratylenchus sp.
- Background
- Soybeans in Beaufort county, variety AG 43FX2, were scouted and it was observed that 15% of field was affected by damping off and stunting in patches and strips across the field. The site is a low area. Some of the plants randomly dead throughout the area. Plants on either side of dead plants are fine.
- Conclusion
- This issue was identified as Soybean lesion nematode, caused by Pratylenchus sp. These nematodes feed by lysing, or breaking open, cells of the roots forming cavities. This allows them to migrate intracellularly to continue feeding on healthy tissue. Necrotic lesions can be observed on the root as a result of the damage caused by feeding and movement.
