Pythium root and or crown rot

scouted July 6, 2023

Scientific Name
Pythium sp.
Background
Soybeans in Robeson county were scouted and observed 75% of the field was affected by dieback, browning between the veins, scorch or burns, speckling /stippling, and stunting. The soybeans started rapidly dying after about the 2nd trifoliate stage. The only herbicide applied is Roundup which was applied to a Roundup tolerant variety.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Pythium root rot and/or Pythium crown rot. This disease is caused by Pythium sp. Pythium root rot and crown rot can result in both pre- and post-emergence damping-off, leading to delayed emergence and stunting of infected seedlings. Prevalence tends to increase in warm and moist, but not saturated soils. This pathogen is an oomycete.
