Soybean aphids

scouted Nov. 12, 2024

Scientific Name
Family Aphididae
Background
Soybeans in Pitt County were being scouted and observed 85% of the field was affected by browning and yellowing in the crown and pods. The discoloration was localized. The site is in a high area. The plants exhibited signs of insect chewing and chlorosis.
Conclusion
The leaves exhibited damage from soybean aphids, which suck phloem from the plant. Excess sugars in the plant are excreted by the aphids as a liquid, which sticks to leaves, allowing fungi to grow. These black colored fungi can discolor the plants. In vegetative stage plants, aphids are only a threat under very high populations. Parasitic wasps, insect predators, and a parasitic fungal pathogen of aphids can exert a powerful influence to keep aphids in check.
