- Scientific Name
- Family Aphididae
- Background
- Soybeans in Pitt County were being scouted and observed 85% of the field was affected by browning and yellowing in the crown and pods. The discoloration was localized. The site is in a high area. The plants exhibited signs of insect chewing and chlorosis.
- Conclusion
- The leaves exhibited damage from soybean aphids, which suck phloem from the plant. Excess sugars in the plant are excreted by the aphids as a liquid, which sticks to leaves, allowing fungi to grow. These black colored fungi can discolor the plants. In vegetative stage plants, aphids are only a threat under very high populations. Parasitic wasps, insect predators, and a parasitic fungal pathogen of aphids can exert a powerful influence to keep aphids in check.
