- Scientific Name
- Heterodera glycines
- Background
- Soybeans in Chowan county were scouted and it was observed that 20% of the field was affected by wilting and decay in strips.
- Conclusion
- This issue was identified as soybean cyst nematode, caused by Heterodera glycines. The nematode damages the soybean roots by penetrating, feeding and reproducing on the root tissue. Nematicide fumigant, in-furrow, seed treatments products are available, though effectiveness is variable, especially under elevated SCN pressure. These chemical controls for SCN and other nematodes are often expensive and may not always results in a yield response.
