Fusarium ear rot

scouted Oct. 24, 2024

Scientific Name
Fusarium sp.
Background
Corn was being scouted in Robeson County, and it was observed that 70% of the field had affected ears. The ears of corn showed signs of disease, and a sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
Conclusion
The cause for this was identified as Fusarium ear rot. This was identified by the starburst symptom that is caused by the fungus growing under the kernel pericarp. Fusarium ear rot is associated with fumonisins which can cause fumonising poisoning. Swine and equine are the most sensitive to fumonisins.
