- Scientific Name
- Heterodera glycines
- Background
- Soybeans in Beaufort County were scouted and it was observed that 10% of the field was affected by browning and yellowing between the veins, root rot, and wilting in patches around the field.
- Conclusion
- This issue was identified as soybean cyst nematode, caused by Heterodera glycines. The nematode damages the soybean roots by penetrating, feeding and reproducing on the root tissue. Nematicide fumigant, in-furrow, seed treatments products are available, though effectiveness is variable, especially under elevated SCN pressure. These chemical controls for SCN and other nematodes are often expensive and may not always results in a yield response.
