Nitrogen and manganese deficiency

scouted July 6, 2022

Scientific Name
Abiotic
Background
Soybeans in Onslow county, variety Pioneer 68AX07, were scouted and observed 10% of the field was affected by nutritional deficiencies. The new growth appears to have a bleached appearance. Corn was planted in 2021, and exhibited some of the same signs. There are high spots and low spots in sunny portions of the field are experiencing these symptoms.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as deficiencies in nitrogen and manganese. Nitrogen deficiencies can occur in water saturated soils where rhizobium nodulation is reduced. Low pH can also cause reduced nitrogen quantities. Experiments in North Carolina fail to demonstrate profitable response to nitrogen fertilizer, documentation and soil sampling is recommended. If nitrogen deficiency is persistent over multiple years consider inoculating with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Manganese deficiency is common is coase and low organic matter coastal plain soils. The use of poultry litter can induce a manganese deficiency due to the high pH. Soil and tissue samples are recommend.
