Soybean Cyst nematodes

scouted Sept. 19, 2024

Scientific Name
Heterodera glycines
Background
Soybeans in Duplin County of variety DynaGro 5.7, 5 5 were scouted, and it was observed that the fields were affected by dieback, yellowing, stunting, root rot, and stem rot. It was observed that some areas have shorter plants than others and have a thin plant stand. The issue appeared earlier in the growing season, and a sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis. The site is a high area, dry and sunny.
Conclusion
This issue was identified as soybean cyst nematode, caused by Heterodera glycines. The nematode damages the soybean roots by penetrating, feeding, and reproducing on the root tissue. Nematicide fumigant, in-furrow, seed treatment products are available, though effectiveness is variable, especially under elevated SCN pressure. These chemical controls for SCN and other nematodes are often expensive and may not always result in a yield response.
