Soybean Phytophthora root and stem rot

scouted Sept. 12, 2022

Scientific Name
Phytophthora sojae
Background
Soybeans in Iredell county were scouted and observed 10% of the field was affected by browning, leaf spots and wilting on the upper leaves in patches in the field. There were fungal structures on leaves. The previous crop is wheat.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Phytophthora root and stem rot. Phytophthora root and stem rot of soybean is caused by oomycetes (water molds). Cultural practices that improve soil drainage is important to limit the spread. Because infections often take place early in the growing season, use of a seed treatment or soil-applied fungicide may be beneficial to reducing infections.
