- Scientific Name
- Potassium deficiency
- Background
- A corn field, variety Dynagro 57-51, was being scouted and it was observed that 5% of the field was affected by blight, browning, yellowing, and stunting in random patches. The field is a high, dry and sunny site. The grower has noticed substantial yield decline with grain production in this particular field over the past couple of years. The field was planted with the same corn hybrid for the whole field and you can notice these symptoms in random small patches. Appears to favor some possible nutrient issue but wanted to double check if any disease is within the field as well.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as potassium deficiency. Potassium deficiency appears first on the lower leaves and it causes yellowing to necrotic tissue in the outer leaves margins. The symptoms for potassium deficiency start at the tip of the leave and move down towards the base. Symptoms for potassium deficiency can occur even when there's enough potassium in the soil when the soil is dry because the uptake is limited.
