- Scientific Name
- Pythium sp.
- Background
- Soybeans in Hyde county, variety Asgrow 40XF0, were scouted and observed with 3% of the field being affected by defoliation, dieback, browning, yellowing, fruit and vegetable rot, and mold mycelium in random spots of the field. The site was wet and sunny. Some entire plants were dying prematurely with white mold at the base of the plant. Some plants had root knot nematode galls on the roots and some pods were not filled.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as Pythium root rot and/or Pythium crown rot. This disease is caused by Pythium sp. Pythium root rot and crown rot can result in both pre- and post-emergence damping-off, leading to delayed emergence and stunting of infected seedlings. Prevalence tends to increase in warm and moist, but not saturated soils. This pathogen is an oomycete.
