Cercospora stem blight

scouted Aug. 24, 2023

Scientific Name
Cercospora kikuchii
Background
Soybeans in Moore county were scouted and observed 50% of the field affected by canker and dieback, stem rot, in widespread strips. There is galling on roots in addition to nodules. Affected areas stretch from one end of the field to another which is not characteristic of nematodes. Stems have sunken lesions at or near the soil line and vascular tissue is necrotic under the lesion.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Cercospora blight of soybean. This disease is caused by the pathogen Cercospora kikuchii and although it's common in soybeans it rarely causes significant yield losses in North Carolina. Chemical management and cultural practices are both options to control Cercospora leaf blight.
