VT corn was scouted in a greenhouse at 80° F under drip irrigation. Leaves started developing yellow spots with brown sticky residue under them throughout the entire room in a day or two. The room is subject to feeding by Western Thrips and Two spotted spidermite. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as an abiotic cause, because no fungal spores and no bacterial streaming was detected, also the rapid onset across the entire greenhouse supports the abiotic cause rather than a fungal infection. Adjusting pH toward the optimal range for corn may alleviate the issue and reduce symptom development.
