Phytopythium helicoides

scouted Aug. 17, 2021

Scientific Name
Phytopythium helicoides
Background
Soybeans in Perquimans county, variety Syngenta NK72-B2XF, were scouted and observed with 5% of the field affected by damping off, dieback, and wilting. The previous crop was corn and the soybeans were planted May 15. The seed was untreated and the land was leveled before planting. The site drains well but heavy rainfall has been occuring at the site. 400 lbs of 8-12-36 were applied along with Intrepid Edge, B, Mn, and bifenthrin. Disease is mostly present in areas of the field most saturated with water.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Pythium root rot and/or Pythium crown rot. This disease is caused by Pythium sp. Pythium root rot and crown rot can result in both pre- and post-emergence damping-off, leading to delayed emergence and stunting of infected seedlings. Prevalence tends to increase in warm and moist, but not saturated soils. This pathogen is an oomycete.
