Cercospora leaf blight

scouted Sept. 19, 2024

Scientific Name
Cercospora kikuchii
Background
Soybeans in Duplin County of variety DynaGro 5.7, 5 5 were scouted, and it was observed that the fields were affected by dieback, yellowing, stunting, root rot, and stem rot. It was observed that some areas have shorter plants than others and have a thin plant stand. The issue appeared earlier in the growing season, and a sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis. The site is a high area, dry and sunny.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Cercospora blight of soybean. This disease is caused by the pathogen Cercospora kikuchii, and although it's common in soybeans, it rarely causes significant yield losses in North Carolina. Chemical management and cultural practices are both options to control Cercospora leaf blight.
