- Scientific Name
- Heat stress
- Background
- A tobacco field was being scouted and it was observed that 20% of the field was affected by blackening, browning, between the veins, leaf spot, scorch/burn, and wilting. There was frass present in 20% of the field as well as stink bugs. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as heat stress. Heat indices above 95°F are concerning for the holding ability of the crop. High temperatures can accelerate leaf deterioration. Sunscald occurs due to wilting, moisture loss and root damage. Crop stage is an important consideration especially when irrigation water is limited.
