Fusarium rot

scouted July 6, 2021

Scientific Name
Fusarium sp.
Background
Soybeans in Durham county were scouted and observed 25% of the field was affected by defoliation, yellowing both marginal and between the veins. Symptoms start as yellowing on lower leaves and quickly advances to complete plant defoliation.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Fusarium rot. This is caused by many soil-borne fungi in the family fusarium. These species of Phytophthora is not a true fungi, but belong to a group of fungal like organisms called oomycetes (water molds). Cultural practices that improve soil drainage is important to limit the spread Because infections often take place early in the growing season, use of a seed treatment or soil-applied fungicide may be beneficial to reducing infections. Chemistries containing mefenoxam or metalaxyl are both effective to reducing disease.
