Powdery mildew

scouted Nov. 21, 2024

Scientific Name
Erysiphe diffusa
Background
Soybeans in Pitt County, variety 675, full season, were being scouted, and it was observed that 5% of the field was affected by blight, defoliation, as well as marginal browning and yellowing of the leaves. The plants also showed signs of insect chewing and signs of chlorosis and curling. The field borders with peanunt fields. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
Conclusion
The leaves from this field were diagnosed with soybean powdery mildew. This disease is a common leaf disease that is caused by an obligate biotrophic fungus, meaning that it can only grow on a living host. This disease favors cool conditions, which are rare during the North Carolina growing season.
