Phytophthora root

scouted July 7, 2021

Scientific Name
Phytophthora sp.
Background
Soybeans in Perquimans county were scouted and observed 2% of the was affected by localized canker, marginal browning, yellowing, root rot, and stem rot. The site is low area and sunny.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Phytophthora root rot. Phytophthora root and stem rot of soybean is caused by Phytophthora sp. These species of Phytophthora is not a true fungi, but belong to a group of fungal like organisms called oomycetes (water molds). Cultural practices that improve soil drainage is important to limit the spread of P. sojae. Because infections often take place early in the growing season, use of a seed treatment or soil-applied fungicide may be beneficial to reducing infections. Chemistries containing mefenoxam or metalaxyl are both effective to reducing disease.
