Corn of variety DKC 69-99/DKC 68-35 was being scouted in Duplin county and it was observed 30% field was affected by root rot and stem rot in random patches and strips. some corn was root and stalk logged. The 69-99 was more stalk lodge, where as the 68-35 had more root lodge. The sample was taken to PDIC for testing to know the reason behind lodging.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Aspergillus ear rot caused by Aspergillus Flavus. This fungus favors hot and dry conditions after pollination. It typically infects corn after injury and/or stress. Aspergillus Flavus produces aflatoxins, which are carcinogenic and toxic negatively affecting the health of livestock and humans is consumed. This species appears a green powdery mold on ears.
