- Background
- A soybean field in Greene County was being scouted, and it was observed that 20% of the field was affected by defoliation, yellowing between the veins, scorch/burn, and stem rot. The field is a sunny, high, and dry site. There is suspicion of brown stem rot and sudden death syndrome. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum sp.. While usually a disease that shows in the stem, petioles, and pods with red to dark brown lesions. It can also cause leaf curling and reddening of the veins. Warm, wet weather favors infection and disease development. Crop rotation and tillage can reduce inoculum, while foliar fungicides will reduce disease, but it's usually not profitable.
