Pythium root and or crown rot

scouted Aug. 29, 2022

Scientific Name
Pythium sp.
Background
Soybeans in Person county, variety P59A1, were scouted and it was observed that 80% of the field was affected by cracks, browning and stunting. Substantial deer damage on the plants and a slow growth rate has been observed.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Pythium root rot and/or Pythium crown rot. This disease is caused by Pythium sp. Pythium root rot and crown rot can result in both pre- and post-emergence damping-off, leading to delayed emergence and stunting of infected seedlings. Prevalence tends to increase in warm and moist, but not saturated soils. This pathogen is an oomycete.
