- Scientific Name
- Colletotrichum destructivum
- Background
- Soybeans in Pitt county, variety AG69XFO, were scouted and observed 30% of the field was affected by marginal browning and yellowing and stunting, in localized patches. This field has been fallow for 2 years and nodulation is poor and nonexistent. Large areas are dwarfed and compaction was evident throughout the field. Lime was applied in the spring at the amount of 1500 pounds per acre. Leaf tips on the remaining plants have necrosis.
- Conclusion
- The cause of disease was identified as Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum. While usually a disease that shows in the stems and the petioles, it can also cause leaf curling and reddening of the veins. Warm, wet weather favors infection and disease development. Crop rotation and tillage can reduce inoculum, while foliar fungicides will reduce disease, but it's usually not profitable.
