- Scientific Name
- Phytophthora sp.
- Background
- Soybeans in Yadkin county, variety AG45XF2, were scouted and observed 80% of field was affected by defoliation, browning, reddening and yellowing between the veins, leaf spots. The soybeans were planted near a stream but the symptoms were over 80 acres. The soybeans grow slow.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as Phytophthora root and stem rot. Phytophthora root and stem rot of soybean is caused by oomycetes (water molds). Cultural practices that improve soil drainage is important to limit the spread. Because infections often take place early in the growing season, use of a seed treatment or soil-applied fungicide may be beneficial to reducing infections.
